When God Feels Distant
Have you ever felt spiritually dry?
Like you’re praying—but not connecting?
Reading the Bible—but it feels quiet?
Maybe you once had a season where God felt close.
Worship was real. Prayer was easy.
But now… it feels distant.
If that’s where you are, don’t lose heart.
In today’s devotional, we’ll walk through four biblical steps to help you deepen your relationship with God—so your faith becomes more personal, more powerful, and more consistent.

Step 1: Return to the Cross
Every journey deeper into God’s heart begins with grace.
You don’t have to earn your way back to Him.
He already made the way.
Romans 5:8 tells us, “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
If you want a deeper relationship with God, start here:
Remember what Jesus did for you.
You are not pursuing God to earn His love—you’re responding to it.
Don’t let guilt keep you at a distance.
Return to the cross, and let His mercy restore your heart.
Step 2: Trust Truth Over Feelings
Feelings come and go—but God doesn’t.
Sometimes He feels near.
Other times, you may wonder if He’s even listening.
But in John 14:16, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would be with us forever.
Romans 8 reminds us that nothing can separate us from His love.
So even when your emotions waver, God is steady.
To grow deeper in your faith, you must anchor yourself in what’s true—not what you feel.
Make it a habit to read Scripture regularly so truth becomes your foundation.
Step 3: Feed What You Want to Grow
Galatians 6:8 says,
“Whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”
Think of your heart as a garden.
What you plant is what will grow.
If your daily input is social media, mindless scrolling, or constant noise, you’ll reap distraction and distance.
But if you fill your soul with prayer, Scripture, worship, and godly community—your heart will begin to flourish.
Want to go deeper with God?
Feed your soul with things that draw you closer to Him.
Disconnect from distractions and create space to hear His voice.
Step 4: Remove What’s Blocking the Flow
Sometimes our spiritual dryness isn’t from a lack of discipline—it’s from a sin we haven’t addressed.
James 1:15 warns that sin, when full-grown, leads to death.
And Jesus said in Luke 9:23,
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”
A deeper relationship with God requires surrender.
If there’s something in your life that’s stealing your peace, breaking your focus, or dulling your spirit—it’s time to lay it down.
Confess it. Cut it off.
Talk to a mentor or trusted believer who can pray with you and help keep you accountable.
Your intimacy with God is too precious to trade for temporary pleasure.
Encouragement & Prayer Invitation
So let’s review the four steps to deepen your relationship with God:
Step 1: Return to the Cross
Step 2: Trust Truth Over Feelings
Step 3: Feed What You Want to Grow
Step 4: Remove What’s Blocking the Flow
James 4:8 says,
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
Your spiritual depth isn’t measured by how you feel today—it’s formed by the steps you take each day.
And when you draw near to Him—He promises to meet you there.
Prayer:
Father, I want to go deeper with You.
Forgive me for letting distractions and sin pull me away.
I return to the cross. I receive Your grace.
Help me to walk in truth, feed my spirit with what honors You, and remove anything that blocks our closeness.
Thank You for never leaving me. I draw near to You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
